Acequias

The network of acequias (irrigation channels) in the Sierra Nevada area is one of the most spectacular, extensive and best preserved in Spain.

These channels enable the regulation of the water cycle, but irrigation channels are also a very important element in shaping the landscape, as they allow for the existence of vegetation corridors that enable greater biodiversity in mountainous areas.

The water network used to irrigate fields in some cases crosses population centres, giving rise to urban irrigation channels. The channels through which water is transported within villages are integrated into the streets and run along the central part of the road.

The most iconic irrigation channel in Pampaneira is located on Verónica Street.

The meltwater from the peaks of the Sierra Nevada springs from the Cerrillo Fountain, passes through the wash house and flows down Estación Street before reaching the popular street of La Alpujarra village. The canal leads to the lowest part of the village to provide irrigation water for crops.

Also on Partidero Street, above Square de la Libertad, there is a water channel that corresponds to an old irrigation channel, although it no longer carries water.
