Poqueira River

The Poqueira is a short mountain river. Its source is on the western slope of Mulhacén, at an altitude of 3,479 metres. It is formed by the confluence of the Toril and Naute rivers and, in turn, by the confluence of several streams from Mulhacén and Veleta (both mountains).

In the most rugged part, in the waters below Pampaneira, it is possible to practise canyoning, one of the longest and most technical descents in Andalusia, which is usually done at the end of the thaw and in summer. It is a technical descent that requires experience.

The Poqueira forms an impressive ravine that is criss-crossed by various irrigation channels of Arab origin, which allowed for the efficient use of water for irrigation. The river’s winding course has enabled the establishment of hydroelectric power stations.

It flows through La Alpujarra region, crossing the ravine of the same name, and empties into the River Trevélez, before this in turn flows into the River Guadalfeo, near Órgiva.
