Coinciding with All Saints’ Day, the Mauraca is celebrated. This is what the chestnut festival or castañada is called in La Alpujarra region, and it is also celebrated in other towns in Granada.
The origin of this celebration dates back to the Galician settlers who arrived after the expulsion of the Moors. Since the early 1990s, it has been revived and is celebrated with great success and participation.
Throughout the day, there are organised walks to gather chestnuts, which are then roasted on a bonfire while traditional music is played and people dance.
